Born in 1976 in Lagos, where he still lives and works, Abayomi studied Fine and Applied Arts at the Yaba College of Technology. He is a professional artist who previously worked as an illustrator in an advertising company following his youth service in Kaduna. He is a full-time practising artist and has exhibited his work in many exhibitions, most recently at Chuck Gallery in M...anchester, in hopes to project his work around Europe.
Sokenu’s works portray a high standard of application, sifting colours on canvas to convey intriguing depths between the strokes of accidental lines that connect different edges of the canvas. His works express the richness of human enterprise, guided by the mutual stimulating interaction between man and his environment. His colour spectrum is fascinating as he frequently utilises tactile qualities of short strokes of colour. He also regularly explores the use of design elements as stylistic tools in creating illusion of images, infusing and juxtaposing these with textures of colours. Sokenu does not imitate photographs or mimic mere likeness, but enjoys allowing viewers to identify his subjects based on his unique artistry. With a mastery of oil paint, he has also recently begun to explore other media in his new series of works with the use of spray paints, news print, oil pastel and acrylic paints.
Abayomi is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artist (SNA), ARTzero Group, and is the co-founder of Art Clique, an art organisation in Nigeria, and became the president of the group in 2010. He also holds the position of assistant curator of ‘Oreze’ (The King’s Crowd), an annual exhibition held in the palace of the Obi of Onitsha.
