Artist Biography - AD-Reflex
The fairly new collaborative duo, AD-Reflex, was formed in 2015 and consists of contemporary South African artists Johan Conradie and Karl Gustav Sevenster.
Both artists draw from their rich collective histories that involve the history of art, photography, digital technologies, computer programming, painting, embroidery, as well as curating.
Both artists met thr...ough a chance encounter, leading to their merging collaboration. Previously Sevenster, a computer specialist and self taught artist, worked alone with no creative peer interaction, carving out his unique artistic expression in unexplored territory. In comparison, Conradie, with award winning expertise and artistic skill was focussed on art education and helping others in achieving their own artistic dreams.
Starting as an experimental collaborative project, the duo rapidly became a creative partnership, subsequently resulting in the creation of AD-REFLEX and a permanent shift in career focus for both individuals. Their chosen name 'AD-REFLEX', refers to notions " 'Ascend' and 'Descend' " and how we respond accordingly. The artists collaborative practice relates to the seductive forms of the sacred. Deploying a sophisticated, poetic dialogue through diverse media and plumbing into the depths of art history and different cultural canons. AD-REFLEX combines complicated techniques and processes including oil painting, digital photography, photo-manipulation software techniques, Swarovski crystals and the physical freezing of objects in ice, which are then re-photographed in a studio.
The work of AD-Reflex is about duality and unexpected juxtapositions of beauty and decay, deploying a sophisticated, poetic dialogue among these media, and plumbing the depths of art history and other cultural canons. Their art resists and transcends perceptions of traditional boundaries on every level. The artwork of AD-Reflex constantly morphs between abstraction and representation and is produced by complicated techniques and processes including oil painting, digital photography, photo-manipulation software techniques, Swarovski crystals and the physical freezing of objects in ice, which are then re-photographed in a studio.
Between the two of them, Johan Conradie and KarlGustav Sevenster have a long list of solo shows as well as group exhibitions on an international scale - As the collective AD-REFLEX, they had their first group-exhibition on October 14, 2016 at the Pretoria Arts Association in Pretoria, South Africa titled DESIRE.
The collision of two artists, producing a new identity and artistic energy, has resulted in International recognition. The duo have exhibited around the world, winning awards at "F The Art World" International Art Competition (2018) and RE:ARTISTE's 4th Annual International Exhibition "Show Your World".
