Alex McCarthy studied at the Plymouth College of Art and Design and the Cardiff School of Art and Design. McCarthy designs and creates beautiful, highly textured, vessels which are dripping with a gold, platinum or copper lustre. He works from his studio in Bristol.
The tactile qualities of his artefacts are inspired by textures that surround us such as tree bark, natura...l rocks, cracking paint and even marine life. The thrown vessel is used as a canvas to investigate the properties of these surfaces. Metal oxides add depth whilst the gold, platinum and copper lustre adds a sense of opulence.
No two pieces are ever the same. This is intentional, as he feel each piece has its own story to tell. He wants the viewer to interact with the work through touch and perhaps see if they can feel the pots journey.
Alex McCarthy has won the 2014, Silver Award, Craft & Design Selected Makers Award 2010, and the Student Award, Art in Clay, Hatfield House. Alex is also a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and an associate member of the Craft Potters Association.
