Andrea graduated in 2016 with a First Class BSc (hons)Textiles and Surface Design degree from Huddersfield University. Specialising in woven fabrics, Andrea explored different weaving techniques and materials to understand their reactions when woven into fabric. One material that Andrea critically explored during her time at University was wool. No other material would appe...al in the same way due to the versatile properties that it possesses. This interest in wool, continued within Andrea’s final major project. This project combined wool with elastomeric yarn to experiment with different arrangements of the materials, encouraging the fabric to react in different ways. When the fabric was released from the looms tension, a satisfying tactile and textural fabric was created. Andrea was awarded a Silver Medal award from the Worshipful Company of Woolman for ‘Best Final Year Concentrating on the Development of Wool’.
The passion found for technical textiles, combined with Andrea’s inquisitive nature, led her to pursue a career within textiles manufacturing in Huddersfield. When relocating back to Liverpool in 2017, Andrea continued to travel from Liverpool to Huddersfield for work. The time spent traveling between a dock-front city and a rural landscape became the inspiration for her current collection; Sky Gardens.
The ‘Sky Gardens’ collection explores the contrast between cityscapes and rural landscapes. On the one hand, cityscapes are characterised by high rise buildings and the man-made materials that make them. On the other hand, the rural landscape is one of rolling shrubbery, climbing vines and the natural shades of green. Andrea aimed to combine these two contrasting environments within her work to create a reflection of the distance travelled throughout a piece of artwork. The hand-woven wall hangings are an intricate, abstract interpretation of these two contrasts.
