Barrie Houghton was born in Kent in 1941. He studied at St Martins School of Art and Paris with a scholorship. After travelling extensively around Europe and North Africa, he became a theatre designer in Canterbury and then eventually an actor. Returning to painting around 20 years ago. During his time at art school, Houghton developed a loose, 'painterly' and dramatic style.... Houghton is a painter with not one style, whatever the subject matter there is a underlying theme of abstract. Using expressive brush strokes gives his paintings a sense of movement and atmosphere.
Houghton has had a number of solo exhibitions in London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. Past solo exhibitions in the South East include Lynne Strover Gallery, Cambridge and Old Fire Engine House, Ely. His work has been included in Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Singer and Friedlander Watercolour Exhibition.
