David Axtell is a former graduate of Falmouth School of Art and Design. He is an award winning illustrator. His illustrations for the Macmillan's children's book Fruits (Valerie Blooms' Caribbean poem) won the Smarties Book Prize Bronze Medal in 1997.
Inspired by figurative art from Millet to Edward Hopper, David has been an illustrator for 15 years. In that tim...e he has worked for a wide variety of publishers, including Random House, Egmont, OUP, Harpercollins and Macmillan. Producing book covers for Puffin Classics like the Diaries of Anne Frank and portraits toward biographies of HG Wells by Michael Foot.
As well as an illustrator David is a consummate painter David interested in the relationship between the interaction of people and the sea. In his calm, measured work, from landscape studies to wide panoramas he is searching toward a gradual unspoken narrative which pulls the viewer into his paintings.
Originally from Oxford he has lived and worked in North Cornwall for the last ten years, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings.
