Based in the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands, in the bustling market town of Leek, David Hunt started his professional life as an art teacher. For the last 20 years David has devoted his time to painting full time.

David has regularly contributed to exhibitions at the Blackheath Gallery in London and to the Pastel Society in the Mall Gallery. His style and quality h
...ave been recognised both nationally and internationally. He has won several prestigious awards for his work, including the Pastel Society’s Tom Rice Award.

The Staffordshire Moorlands rugged landscape and the beautiful beaches of North Devon provide wonderfully complementary scenic challenges. David Hunt works primarily with oils and pastels, however recently, he has introduced an interesting combination of pastel and gouache which gives an extraordinary texture and dimension to the work.

“The visual stimulation provided by the Staffordshire Moorlands and the strong feelings engendered by the changing climatic conditions have always been with me. This strong motivation has, I believe, led to my continued development as a painter working in oil paint and soft pastels. I am always striving to develop my understanding of how the media can be used to explore the strong feelings provoked by my surroundings.”

The recurrent themes of light and texture, used with daring effects, are aspects of his work which are constantly developing and maturing. David’s successful developments in colour, style and subject have been commended by collectors of his work.

“Over the last few years, the constant changes in mood and atmosphere that one sees along the coastal fringes of Devon and Dorset have been another source of material to me. My desire is to put into visual form the tremendously powerful reaction that I have to light, the mood and it’s relationship to the landscape.”

David’s influences are evident in his work. Monet, Constable and Turner are his major influences. David shares their innovative and daring use of light, colour.
