Donald McIntyre artwork for sale and artist biography
Donald McIntyre was born in Yorkshire and spent his formative years in the west coast of Scotland. He was educated at Scarborough College and Skipton Grammar School.
Near his home in Garelochhead, a colony of artists had settled under the influence of James Wright RSW. McIntyre also studied under Wright and they became close friends. Under Wright`s teachings, McIntyre de...veloped a palette firmly rooted in the Scottish tradition. Whilst the desire to take up painting as a profession was always present, he trained as a dentist, served in the army and taught in schools until he was forty.
Like many artists, Donald McIntyre was inspired by the landscape of his childhood. His earliest memories are of the dramatic west coast of Scotland. He has a love of the coastline of the British Isles, where he regularly goes exploring in search of landscapes to draw and paint. Smaller works may be completed in situ, but sketches, which capture rapidly changing light and mood, are taken back to his studio at home as a reference for his painting.
McIntyre`s work is in the permanent collections of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the National Gallery of Wales, and the Welsh Arts Council He is also in the collections of Robert Fleming Holdings plc, Birkenhead Art Gallery, Newport (Gwent) Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil Gallery, Welsh Contemporary Arts Society and Southport Gallery.
Donald McIntyre held solo exhibitions at Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff in 1965 and 1966. He has exhibited in the Thackery Gallery in London from 1969 and has shown in The Royal Cambrian Academy, and Racines Gallery.
He had a retrospective exhibition at Oriel Ynys Mon, Llangefni in 1996. McIntyre has also exhibited at the Phoenix Gallery in Lavenham, NWG and the Royal National Eisteddfod. He has also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, and Royal Society of Marine Artists, and is a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art.
