Emma Whitelock artwork for sale and artist biography
Emma studied Art alongside English Literature at the University of York St John. Graduating with a First Class Honours degree and the University’s Humanities Prize, she won a British Academy Scholarship to undertake an interdisciplinary MA by Research in English with History of Art at the University of York. She has been exhibiting professionally since 2015.
Emma’s work ...depicts evocative land and seascapes, incorporating a female figure. She frequently takes inspiration from her native Yorkshire, seeking to portray an emotional connection. Atmospheric and expressive, her paintings are produced primarily in acrylic, combined with a variety of other media such as heavy gesso, acrylic mediums, inks, glazes and sometimes collage elements. Texture is integral to her work and she enjoys freely evolving this through the layering of materials. Emma enjoys the process of developing areas as they emerge, rubbing back and building up, scratching into the surface and working with tools beyond the brushes, from palette knives and sponges to drawing implements, creating diversity in her mark-making. Composition is a key element with pathways and horizon lines creating visual journeys and colour employed as an intuitive response. Her combination of landscape, figure and mood created through modern mixed media techniques creates what could be seen as a contemporary interpretation of Romanticism.
