Gordon King was born on the 6th June, 1939 and spentspent most of his early childhood on the Fife coast of Scotland, the home of his father, before moving south of the border to Reading in Berkshire.
He studied life drawing and painting at Reading University Art School and later trained as an illustrator at Carlton Studios. At 22 he became freelance, working for major ma...gazines and advertising agencies, illustrating books and in his spare time developing his portraits and paintings.
Gradually he built up the commission side of his work by painting portraits and exhibiting his work until in the mid 70s he gave up illustration work altogether to enable him to concentrate full-time on his paintings which at that time were predominantly in oils. Success came quite rapidly, showing at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions in London and later at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, painting mostly figurative subjects.
In watercolours he found his true passion and his paintings of girls in natural surroundings in this medium soon became his trade mark. Gordon’s ability to portray his subjects with a delightful delicacy and atmosphere made sure of the popularity of these originals. And together with the success of his prints, limited editions and silk-screens brought him the high profile that he has today as one of Britain's finest watercolorists.
