Artist Biography - Leila Godden
After a Business Studies degree, and 12 years as an accountant, Leila Godden left her job to focus on her true passion - painting.
She trained at Herefordshire College of Art & Design, has attended The St Ives School of Painting, and has been selling her paintings through galleries since 2004. Leila is a member of the United Society of Artists, regularly exhibiting ...in London.
Leila grew up in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and spent most of her childhood on the beach - hence her infatuation with the sea. Now based in Lewes in East Sussex, where she lives and continues to depict her childhood fixation - the sea.
Leila specialises in seascapes, ranging from figurative to abstract, and often incorporating texture - due to her deep connection and identification with the sea and its changing surface. Her paintings seek to recreate this connection, by distilling something essential about what it is to be part of this ever changing, ever the same, timeless phenomenon.
“My source of inspiration is my connection with the sea. The vast panorama of changing light, dramatic weather and powerful water, framed by rocks solid with history, yet transient with time and the rhythm of the earth. Here, I feel a completeness incorporating time and space, stillness and movement. My paintings seek to recreate this connection, by distilling something essential about what it is to be part of this ever changing, ever the same, timeless phenomenon.”
Each piece starts with something that resonates, perhaps a glimpse of the play of light as water cascades over a rock, a moody horizon or, less tangible, the feeling of a painting which needs to be expressed.
Her paintings are formed from a combination of improvisation and thought out responses to the marks made as they reveal themselves to her, coaxing the paintings to grow and settle, until her piece reaches full completion.
Golden acrylics are her medium of choice, which responds well to working in layers. She enjoys the versatility of luxurious impasto, pouring and flowing freely when paired with water, allowing the pigments to interact.
Lelia uses a limited palette, to create balance and a sense of continuity; aiming for frequent development of thoughts and exploration of techniques. The artist nurtures her concept of improvisation. Her end vision is to create paintings, which expressed both the essence of the chosen subject and herself, as the artist.
Leila is a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors (FPS) and the United Society of Artists (UA), both long established London societies, and Pure Arts Group as well as a Director of artist-run Chalk Gallery, in Lewes, East Sussex. Her paintings are in private collections internationally.
As well as mixed exhibitions she has had several solo shows, and her paintings are in private collections in France, Italy, Israel, the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia, as well as the UK.
