Paula Sharples was born in 1951 and grew up in Sussex. Graduating from Reigate School of Art in the 70’s with a degree in Textile Design, Paula then worked as a freelance designer, producing designs for furnishing, wallpaper, bedding and giftwrap. During this time Paula worked for well known companies such as Coloroll, John Wilman Interiors and John Wolf Decorative Fabrics in t...he USA.
In addition to this, she has also worked for companies such as Portmeirion and Churchill China, as a ceramics pattern designer. Her rich career and the landscape surrounding her home in the Peak District, have been strong artistic influences in her paintings.
Paula mainly creates her paintings using acrylics, inks and graphite, mainly on linen but also on paper, canvas and gesso prepared board. She builds layer upon layer of paint, giving a feeling of depth. Her artworks often depict flowers in her favourite china, against scenic landscape backdrops. The artists combination of still life with landscape is highly stylised, influenced by her years in design. Rather than seeking to accurately capture the scenes in front of her, design and colour are essential in her practice, as well as a decorative element and contemporary feel to her work.
Recently, Paula has dedicated her time to being a full time artist/designer. Her success has lead to exhibits throughout Derbyshire, where she has lived for the past 40 years.
