Phil Tyler studied initially at the East Ham College of Technology (Foundation in Art 1982-83) then Loughborough College of Art & Design for his BA Hons Fine Art (painting) degree graduating in 1986. During these years he spent some time at Virginia Commonwealth University, USA on their BFA Fine At Course. Phil Tyler completed his studies with an MA in Printmaking at Bright...on Polytechnic (1988 to 1990).

Since the early 90's Phil Tyler's central preoccupation has been with the figure or with groups of people in urban environments looked at collective behaviour, the hive mentally of daily routine. He is interested in both the illusory aspect of painting but also the physicality of the medium.

The artists early male nude paintings and self portraits acted as a code for loss. Formations of people in urban spaces spoke as a collective behaviour. The artist is interested in both the illusory aspect of painting and the physicality of paint. Before the artist returned to figurative painting, he was developing an abstract dialogue and aspects of formal abstract painting; gestural and minimal dialogue are still evident in the artists current figurative visual language.

Phil Tyler is an accomplshed, expressive painter and printmaker. His book "Drawing and Painting the Nude" was published in October 2015. He is currently working on a new book on painting the landscape.

Phil's recent paintings are characterised by grief and loss. Their powerful nature has lead them to be included in The Sunday Times Watercolour competition and the ING Discerning Eye competition. This recognition follows the artists success on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year Award. The artist was a finalist on the show, adding to the list of his many successes. On account of his prominence, Phil Tyler has exhibited widely throughout the UK and his works are regularly selected to be featured on Saatchi online.
