2015 British Glass Biennale Award Winner, Ruth Shelley specialises in contemporary glass design. Her works are instantly recognisable for their vivid, dramatic colour in fused and kiln-formed glass which includes panels, tiles, mirrors, bowls, coasters and jewellery.
Although trained in Woven Textiles, Ruth’s love of colour took her to experiment with glass and it’s the...re that she has found her true passion, captivated by how light transformed the glass into shifting reflections and sparkling translucency.
Inspiration is drawn from the colourful world that surrounds her and her affinity to the rich landscape and ever-changing beauty of the mid-Wales coastline. Observing colour, balance and tones of nature, the vibrant palette of sea, mountain and beautiful scenery translate with ease into bright designs in fused glass.
After 16 years of working with glass, Ruth is still continually experimenting and developing glass fusing ideas, techniques and colours. She has recently experimented with gravity, suspending a coloured blank of glass and observing the results as heat is applied, giving it fluidity and movement that is enough to drop it to the floor of the kiln. She has been captivated with this process and is continually experimenting with bigger and deeper drops.
Ruth also designs and produces more traditional leaded lights and has worked alongside architects on numerous restoration projects. She is available to undertake commissions for bespoke pieces, whilst designs can always be tailored to individual preferences for commissions.
Ruth exhibits in the UK and USA and has been awarded several training and project grants by the Welsh Arts Council. She is a Member of the Makers Guild in Wales, Contemporary Glass Society and Cohesion Glass Network. Ruth is a Director of Oriel Makers Gallery, Cardiff.
