Tessa Newcomb artwork for sale and artist biography

Tessa Newcomb was born in 1955 in Suffolk, daughter of the artist Mary Newcomb. She attended Norwich School of Art and Bath Academy of Art, where she graduated with a BA Honours Degree in Fine Art. She then went onto Wimbledon School of Art to do an Advanced Year’s Printmaking course. Tessa has taught Art and Ceramics in Suffolk and Norfolk from 1985-89. In 198...4 she received an Eastern Arts grant.

"Scenes of the Suffolk countryside and coastline dominate her work. She evokes her subjects as “Spaces and Silences.” Pristine, haunting quietness characterises her painterly views of a contemplative white horse in a field, a short ferry ride across a luminous estuary, an improvisatory ballet of birds settling near eerily isolated rural houses, figures walking along a tow path rendered miniscule by the blissfully abandoned, unkempt roof of foliage." Philip Vann.

Tessa has exhibited widely throughout the UK and also in Holland. Her work is in various public collections: Strawberry Hill College, Ocean and Transport plc., Bradford Metropolitan Museum, The Whitworth Art Gallery, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, as well as numerous private collections in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Tessa also exhibits her ceramics and prints.. She designed the jacket illustrations for books by Julia Blackburn: Daisy in the Desert and the paperback edition of The Emperor’s Last Island, both Secker and Warburg, 1994.
Tessa’s work is the subject of a book by critic and author Philip Vann, published by Redcliffe Press Ltd. In 2015 she had a successful solo show at Crane Kalman.

She lives and works in Suffolk with her partner, the artist Telfer Stokes.
