It seems we have always been drawn to the medium of painting. From the dawn of man, there still exist examples of cave paintings - illustrating our primitive lives and actions.
As we developed our understanding of the world and began to manipulate the elements available to us, the medium of painting developed as new materials and paints became available. First came oil and then tempera, gouache, watercolour and acrylic. Now we even use resins and spray paints.
Across the ages we've also seen a shift in the style and focus of paintings, developing from the photorealistic to the abstract. Various periods of history can be associated with these particular styles and indeed the artists that most famously characterised them.
The Renaissance brought to the fore the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Michelangelo and Raphael. The subsequent Baroque movement - Rembrandt, Vermeer and Caravaggio. Romanticist artists included Turner, Constable, Goya and Blake whilst the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements involved Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Cézanne, Degas, Van Gogh and Gaugin.
Most notable of the modern and post-modern 20th Century painters include Pollock, Warhol, Dali, Rothko, Lichtenstein, Richter and of course Picasso.
