We visited the gallery in September, and thought it was fabulous, and the staff were terrific. The hall is gorgeous. We didn't have enough time to see all of it but did visit the Modern Art and the Heroes of Scotland sections. Well worth the visit!! Didn’t expect to enjoy this so much. A fantastic range of portraits. The top floor was a lot of aristocracy and royalty which were very interesting, the middle floor more contemporary. The cafe served a surprisingly excellent range of hot and cold food with an extensive and classy menu. A great free of charge attraction for a rainy day in Edinburgh.

The portraits section of the National Galleries of Scotland is situated in a beautiful neo-Gothic building at the eastern end of Queen Street. It is free to enter and definitely worth a visit. The portraits on the top floor give a good summary of Scottish history through those that made it, while on the lower floor there are portraits of contemporary Scots (including Billy Connolly, Ivor Cutler and that of Nicola Benedetti which won the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year award in 2021 - all pictures attached here)

Wow! So incredible that the National Galleries are free! The portrait one has been my favourite so far. The audio tour you can play for free on your phone and it provides an easy way to understand the portraits better. Loved the photography exhibition there at the moment till march I think. Cafe downstairs and a little shop to buy souvenirs. Great history and also modern works which is refreshing. Would recommend to anyone to visit, an amazing and free day out :D
