Great building, well laid out, lots to see, good gift shop and cafe, just wasn't my thing on the day. As a botanical artist I was excited to see the 'Bloom' exhibition, I enjoyed the old masters but unfortunately the modern paintings were for me a huge disappointment, my fault, should have done more research, art after all is subjective

Lovely gallery. As cheapskates, we did the free permanent exhibition ( tbh not terribly attracted to the 'Bloom' special exhibition). I often pop into the Art Gallery when I am in York as I particularly enjoy the ceramics.It’s free and not too big that you feel overwhelmed.Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.There is a gift shop with a lovely selection; something to suit everyone I think.Also, I like the coffee shop which is easily accessible on the ground floor.I thought that I would update this review as I popped into the Art Gallery today.The staff were busy putting together a new exhibition but I wandered around the rest. It is such a lovely gallery with a mix of styles and media; I love the pottery section and also the ceramics in the main section.

Lovely gallery in a beautiful old building - plenty to see and engage with for both 14 and 3 year old, plus adult! The Thursday family art activity was great and such a well stocked room.Free for us too, as York locals. I would definitely recommend!

I spent an absolutely delightful two hours at the gallery when visiting York for the weekend. The building itself is beautiful and houses a fascinating collection spanning eras and genres. Coffee is good, I come here regularly to see a couple of my favorite pictures - everything is easy to get to and it's never too busy. Discovered a relatively minor Walter Sickert but another added to my go to pica here.

We called in for a cup of tea and scone in the cafe (very nice btw) and them decided to go to the special exhibition before going round the permanent galleries. The special was advertised as a 'drawing' exhibition. There were more paintings and sculpture than drawings and the balance was disappointing. The permanent exhibition is worth visiting though. Lots of early 16th and 17th century art on show. Great ceramics gallery as well. Allow a good 1.5 hours to do it justice. And have a cuppa.
