Maurice Cockrill was born in October 1936 Hartlepool, County Durham, and was a British painter and poet. He died in December 2013. He studied at Wrexham School of Art, North East Wales, then Denbigh Technical College and later the University of Reading from 1960–64. Later on, after moving to Liverpool, where he lived for nearly 20 years, he lectured at the Liverpool College... of Art and Liverpool Polytechnic, he was a second-generation Modern British artist of the Liverpool School. Cockrill exhibited many times in the Walker Art Gallery and was a vital member of the Liverpool arts community. He moved to London in 1982. His work echoed that of John Baum and Sam Walsh, using Pop and Photo-Realist styles, but later he moved towards Romantic Expressionism, as it was shown in his retrospective at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1995.
